Ohio Occupational Therapy Definitions 

Level I Fieldwork - The introductory fieldwork experiences that are a component of an educational program in occupational therapy in which students develop a basic understanding of the needs of clients through directed observation and supervised participation in the occupational therapy process.

Level II Fieldwork - The in-depth fieldwork experiences that are a component of an educational program in occupational therapy that provide multiple occupational therapy services.

Occupational Therapy - The therapeutic use of everyday life activities or occupations with individuals or groups for the purpose of participation in roles and situations in the home, school, workplace, community, and other settings.

Occupational Therapist - A person who is licensed or holds a limited permit to practice occupational therapy and who offers such services to the public under any title incorporating the words "occupational therapy," "occupational therapist," or any similar title or description of services.

Occupational Therapy Assistant - A person who holds a license or limited permit to provide occupational therapy techniques under the general supervision of an OT.

Student Occupational Therapist - A student enrolled in an accredited or candidacy status entry-level occupational therapist education program or a student enrolled in a "World Federation of Occupational Therapy" accredited entry-level occupational therapist education program. Effective January 1, 2021, a student OT must be at least eighteen years old to participate in learning opportunities outside the classroom involving clients.

Student Occupational Therapy Assistant - A student enrolled in an accredited or candidacy status entry-level occupational therapy assistant education program. Effective January 1, 2021, a student OTA must be at least eighteen years old to participate in learning opportunities outside the classroom involving clients.

Supervising Occupational Therapist - The OT who is available to supervise the OTA, the student OT, student OTA, or unlicensed personnel. The supervising OT may be the OT who performed the initial evaluation or another occupational therapist with whom that OT has a documented agreement.

Supervising Occupational Therapy Assistant - The OTA who is appropriately available to supervise the student OTA, the student OT who is completing the level I fieldwork experience, or unlicensed personnel.

Unlicensed Personnel - Any person who is on the job trained and supports the delivery of occupational therapy services by personally assisting the OT, OTA, student OT, and/or student OTA while the OT, OTA, student OT, and/or student OTA is concurrently providing services to the same client.
